THE POSITION Under general direction, serves in a lead engineer capacity for land development; oversees the processing of development applications to ensure engineering objectives are met; coordinates divisional activities with other City departments and outside agencies; provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Public Works/City Engineer and others; and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the Assistant City Engineer or other assigned staff. Exercises general supervision of staff. Provides technical and functional direction to contract staff on a day-to-day or project basis, as needed. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is a professional level classification in the engineering series. The incumbent manages and supervises land development engineering activities. The incumbent organizes and oversees plan check development projects and various other projects and studies. The incumbent is responsible for providing professional-level support to the Director of Public Works/City Engineer and other staff in a variety of areas. The work may include day-to-day lead direction and training of engineering team. This class is distinguished from the Principal Engineer in that the latter has project management responsibility for a variety of complex engineering, capital improvement and land development functions and activities of the City.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and four (4) years of responsible professional civil and municipal engineering project administration experience in land development.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
Possess and maintain a Registered Professional Civil Engineer license in the State of California is desirable.
