Our firm has been retained by the City of Danville, VA to conduct a search for their Electric Engineering and Operations Manager vacancy. Reporting to the Division Director of Power and Light, the Electric Engineering and Operations Manager is responsible for the leadership and management of electric engineering, substation operations, and the utility operations center. The manager leads and performs complex professional work, including directing and implementing the design, bidding, construction and documentation of capital projects and regular maintenance of the City’s electric distribution and transmission systems, including facilities replacement, relocation, reliability improvement and system expansion projects. This is accomplished by overseeing construction projects from budgeting, design, construction, as-builts and project closeout. The position is responsible for managing project scope, schedule and budget. The Electric Engineering and Operations Manager also oversees the daily functions of the department’s 24/7 operations center, including overseeing the dispatching and monitoring of the City’s electric and gas systems.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise employees in the engineering, substation and utility operations work groups. Assist in the training, mentoring and development of staff
Oversee the maintenance of all electrical equipment, including transformers, reclosers, voltage regulators and breakers. Set standards and maintain records in conjunction with testing and maintenance program.
Develop plans for the engineering, construction and maintenance of the City’s electric system. Demonstrate leadership and the desire to constantly improve the City’s electric system.
General Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field. PE (or EIT working toward PE designation) highly desired.
Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in the principles and practices of electric distribution and transmission systems and of electrical system operation, maintenance, repair, loading, capacity, and basic design.
Experience supervising and monitoring employees and their work performance, including providing input or hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness, performance evaluations and realigning work as needed.
Problem-solving and decision making, including under the stress of emergency conditions.
Read and interpret engineering designs, drawing, and specifications related to electrical distribution work.
Communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
