Laboratory is interested in identifying the mechanisms by which plants respond to changes in their light environment.
The Salk Institute of Biological Studies seeks an Applied Agricultural Economist to support its Harnessing Plants CRoPS Initiative, focused on producing enhanced carbon sequestering plants to remediate climate change.
The candidate will be asked to develop quantitative models and short- and long-term forecasts in two main areas. The first area is the potential market impact and adoption of soil health enhancing and carbon sequestering crop varieties. The second is to develop models and scenarios of soil carbon sequestration per hectare planted with Salk’s carbon sequestering crops and the permanence of that carbon, on a global scale. Relevant row crops will include soybean, corn, cotton, rapeseed, wheat, rice, and cover crops include radish, clover and rye grass. The candidate should have background related to optimizing agricultural production, crop and land productivity, soil health, yield, and land and resource management, as well as Agriculture policy. The candidate is expected to interface and advise the multi-disciplinary CRoPS project team with regards to experimental, translational, economic and policy strategies to maximize the beneficial global impact of Salk’s carbon sequestering crops.
