Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking highly organized, independent, and motivated senior level engineers for its Portland office. The position will support the firm’s nationally recognized practice in multimodal transportation planning and design for livable communities and expand the firm’s transportation infrastructure design capabilities. Proven experience in the conceptual design and preliminary engineering of BRT, LRT, Streetcar and enhanced bus transit corridors and geometric design of active transportation facilities, complete streets and multimodal intersection design is required. Multi-disciplinary design management experience is also preferred.

Senior Associate Engineer responsibilities primarily focus on design and planning for municipalities, agencies, universities, and private clients. Work includes conceptual design and preliminary design documentation; assimilation and utilization of geospatial information; development and maintenance of drawing standards, methods and production consistency; quality control of design deliverables; coordination with other engineering disciplines including structural, traffic, geotechnical, electrical, utility and others; coordination with client and partner agency staff and associated design requirements and standards; design management activities such as scope and budget development, progress reporting, change management and scheduled development. Additional planning support activities could include research, data collection, spreadsheet analysis, mapping, writing and editing reports, development of outreach materials, and business development tasks. Candidates must be willing to travel.
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate would be someone who:
holds a Professional Engineering license in Oregon or the ability to obtain licensure in Oregon within one year of hire.
holds a Professional Engineering license in other States with a preference given for WA, CA, CO, TX, NC, HI, MA, VA or FL.
has a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in civil engineering and 7-10 years of experience in transportation engineering design.
has experience working with transportation planning or additional relevant educational attainment in planning, urban design, or landscape architecture.
Above all, we are looking for someone who has a passion for sustainable transportation planning and design, is a strong communicator (oral, written, and visual), have great analytical skills, and is interested in making communities better for our clients and their constituents.
Potential candidates must demonstrate:
Excellent skill in the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microstation
Excellent skill in multimodal design, design development, problem-solving
Proficiency in technical writing, data analysis, presentation development
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
Additional experience with graphics (Illustrator, InDesign, SketchUp), modeling software (Synchro, Vistro, VISSIM), traffic signal controller software, macro simulation (TransCAD, CUBE, etc.), or database analysis will be considered favorably
Telecommuting is allowed.
