The Building Services section of the Planning and Development Services Division is currently hiring for a Building Engineer. This group is a full-service building permit office for all phases of construction on commercial and residential properties in unincorporated Washington County and inside the city limits of Banks, Gaston and North Plains. In addition, they provide electrical permitting, plan review and inspections for the cities of Cornelius, Durham, Forest Grove, Sherwood, and Tualatin and plumbing permitting and inspections for the cities of Banks, Gaston and North Plains. As the Building Engineer, you will be responsible for the review of structural engineering plans and calculations for commercial, industrial, and residential projects for compliance with State adopted codes and accepted structural engineering standards and practices. A deep understanding of the various philosophies in engineering buildings is critical to success in this position. As is the capability to review the designs of engineers to determine compliance with Oregon Structural Specialty Code and referenced standards including ASCE, ACI, AWS, etc. Successful candidates will be resourceful problem solvers, proactive and strategic decision-makers, and adept team-builders. The individual in this role works with external customers as well as fellow staff members in plan review, inspection, and permitting. We are looking for someone who has outstanding personal communication skills and has the ability to articulate complex issues in a straightforward manner.
Education and Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
A Bachelor's Degree in structural or civil engineering; AND
Four (4) years of responsible experience in engineering or plans examination.
Additional Licenses, Certificates, Physical Abilities and Specialty Requirements:
Requires registration as a professional civil or structural engineer with a license to practice in the state of Oregon within six months following appointment.
Oregon A level plans examiner certificate, or apply for and pass both the Oregon Inspector Certificate and ICC commercial building plans examiner certificate within six months after appointment.
Must possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record per Washington County policy.
