The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Dayton invites qualified candidates to apply for the GE EPISCenter Professorship in Aerospace Electrical Power Systems. This tenured position is partially supported by the General Electric Electrical Power Integrated Systems Center (GE EPISCenter), a new $53 million research center, which opened in December 2013 on the University of Dayton campus. The EPISCenter is the headquarters for GE Aviation’s Electrical Power Systems business. The successful candidate will lead a research team in collaboration with the GE EPISCenter. GE EPISCenter Professor is expected to forge partnerships with government laboratories and with local industry to secure funded research from federal agencies and industry. The GE EPISCenter Professor will establish a consortium on aerospace electrical power and power electronics to advance the regional, national and international stature of the University in this field. The GE EPISCenter Professor will expand our academic program in areas relating to electrical power systems. The successful candidate will have an established record of funded research and scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor.
For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, an established record of scholarship, and an established record of funded research commensurate with an appointment at the Associate Professor rank. For appointment at the rank of Professor, an established record of scholarship demonstrating significant contributions to their discipline, and an established record of competitively funded and individually directed research.
The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field, and have effective written communication skills. Based on the nature of this position, the candidate will be required to collaborate with the GE EPISCenter and U.S. government agencies, and access their research facilitates. As such, candidates must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
While the successful candidate may not possess all of these, the following qualifications are desired: a demonstrated research agenda within the technical areas of Electrical Power Systems (especially in the domain of Aerospace Electrical Power Systems), Power Electronics, or Electrical Machines; a demonstrated record of effective leadership experience in an academic or industry research environment, establishing effective collaborative partnerships with other researchers, effective mentoring of diverse populations, effective teaching in graduate and undergraduate electrical engineering courses; experience in academic course or program development; effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills; and an appreciation of the University’s Marianist values of theory-to-practice, practical wisdom, inclusivity, community and educating the whole person.
The department currently has 13 fulltime faculty, 320 undergraduate students, 100 master’s students, and 70 doctoral students. The ECE department has three centers of excellence including the CETRASE (Center of Excellence for Thin-Film Research and Surface Engineering), the Mumma Radar Lab (a center of excellence for distributed sensing, and the Vision Lab (a center of excellence for computer vision). The University of Dayton (UD), and the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), generated $138million in research in 2018. The Sensor Technology Office of UDRI works very closely with ECE faculty on a large number of research projects. UD is ranked first among all Catholic universities for sponsored engineering research and second among all colleges and universities in the nation in materials research. The University of Dayton is also home to a new $30 million Emerson Innovation Center, which opened in March 2016.
