What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation's security If so, we are seeking a motivated Health Physicist for Radiological Operations supporting the Embedded Radiation Protection (RP) Operational Program dedicated to the Neutron Generator Enterprise. The selected candidate will provide technical and leadership support as a Radiological Engineer within their Radiological Operations (RO) team in close collaboration with the RP customers that are part of dedicated functional Mission spaces for implementation and application of all RP services.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

• Assist Radiation Protection customer support teams and individual line organizations to implement operational aspects of corporate Radiation Protection requirements.
• Recommend appropriate controls and develop and implement radiological monitoring protocols in the appropriate application of DOE regulations and orders as well as SNL policy.
• Perform radiological hazard evaluations.
• Design and implement radiological protection safety programs.
• Provide review of customer-owned Safety Basis and Radiological Technical Work Documents (RTWDs, also known TWDs or OPs) in the functional space.
• Assess program effectiveness and line implementation of requirements.
• Assist with incident response, review, analysis, and reporting.
• Develop corrective action plans and lessons learned.
• Provide oversight of radiological control technicians (RCTs).
• Provide mentorship to other Health Physicists.
• Respond to and direct others in incident and emergency response situations.
• Participate in and support internal RP audits and assessments as needed, as well as external audits and assessments as directed.
• Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs.
• Work with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Some travel may be required.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$87,400 - $168,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

• Bachelor's degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, physical science, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. A higher-level degree (MS, PhD) in relevant discipline may also be considered in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
• Experienced with the following:
  • 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

• Experience with the following:
  • Working in a fast-paced research and development environment.
  • Working in an operational DOE health physics program.
  • Continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices.
  • Working in an operational environment such as DOE or NRC facilities or Naval Reactors.
• Providing dedicated operational health physics project management and guidance to line Customers within the SNL functional mission spaces.
• Providing dedicated operational health physics support and guidance around radiation-generating device (RGD) operations.
• Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and direct other health physicists and RCTs.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility.
• Ability to work effectively independently, and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
• Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, moving from program to operational work seamlessly between varying types of radiological concerns (e.g., nuclear facilities, waste management, accelerators, bench-scale R&D, etc.) quickly and effectively.
• Proven track-record of independently developing solutions to and leading a team in solving specific problems related to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact.
• Ability to provide expert analysis of situations to make recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods.
• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification.
• Active DOE Q level or DOD equivalent security clearance.

About Our Team

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection radiological work planning and execution services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.

Security Clearance
