Health Scientist Administrator

The Center for Strategic Scientific Initiatives (CSSI), Office of the Director (OD), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) invites applications for Health Scientist Administrators, GS-601-12/13/14 (2 positions) within the newly launched Physical Sciences in Oncology initiative, which will provide the interconnection needed to facilitate the translation and incorporation of physical sciences approaches to cancer research across the NCI, NIH, and interagency activities. One of the first programs in the initiative is the establishment of Physical Sciences – Oncology Centers (PS-OCs, see physics.cancer.gov). This program will work closely with programs within CSSI, as well as other NCI/NIH programs, to build a continuum of new trans-disciplinary teams and strategic initiatives to enable the convergence of physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering with existing disciplines in cancer biology/oncology research that will lead to exponential progress against cancer.

The individual(s) selected for this position will hold a Ph.D. in health or physical sciences and/or biomedical-related engineering and will have an expert knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of physical sciences and/or biomedical-related engineering that can be applied to oncology, state-of-the-art biomedical research, and health policy to analyze, evaluate, and provide expert advice and consultation on technology research efforts at the physical sciences-oncology interface; excellent written and oral communication skills; GS-12 candidates will need to demonstrate general knowledge of funding mechanisms such as grants, contracts and cooperative agreements, while senior candidates will need to be able to demonstrate prior training and experience (GS-13) or leadership (GS-14) in developing federal grants, contracts, and/or cooperative agreements programs.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and a full Civil Service package of benefits (including leave, retirement, health and life insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, and long-term care insurance) is available.
