Assistant/ Professor College of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering The University of Texas at El Paso - www.utep.edu POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) announces tenure-track and tenured faculty positions in broad areas of experimental aerostructures and energy sciences. In particular, applicants with backgrounds in the following specializations are encouraged to apply: novel and functional composite materials and structures, deployable and inflatable space structures, structural optimization, aeroelasticity, structural health monitoring, carbon sequestration, solar energy especially concentrating solar power (CSP) systems, energy harvesting materials, energy storage, and energy efficiency and sustainability. An opportunity exists for the tenured position to assume the role of department chair. ABOUT THE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UTEP has an enrollment of more than 400 graduate and undergraduate students. The department boasts a rapidly growing research program with emphasis in aerospace, energy and biomedical sciences. The department has research laboratories in biomedical manufacturing and engineering, combustion and propulsion, and high temperature materials. The department also has exceptional computational and CAD/CAM facilities. The department offers BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a MS degree in Manufacturing Engineering. The department also participates in interdisciplinary PhD programs in Materials Science Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering and Computational Science. The department has over 7M in funded research this year, including a recent NASA University Research Center for Space Exploration Technology Research. ABOUT UTEP & EL PASO: UTEP is a Carnegie doctoral-intensive university with an enrollment of over 21,000 students. It serves a large, bicultural population located on the U.S.-Mexico border. The University’s student population, the majority Hispanic, closely mirrors the demographics of the region from which it draws 90% of its students. The campus, situated where the Rocky Mountains meet the Rio Grande, echoes the beauty of the surrounding high desert. UTEP’s rapidly growing research portfolio in the sciences, engineering, health issues and other areas brings in more than $55 million per year in research funding, ranking it in the top three of UT System academic institutions. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidates should hold an earned doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, engineering mechanics, or other closely related discipline. And, will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded, internationally recognized research program, teach graduate and undergraduate-level courses, develop new specialized courses, supervise graduate research and contribute to departmental affairs. RANK & SALARY: Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
